The moment was there at Camp David and Arafat refused to sign; land in Gaza was given back and is now used daily to launch rockets indiscriminately into Israel. Many Palestinian voices of reason wishing to negotiate with Israel have been murdered or kidnapped by Hamas and Hezbollah. I have personal knowledge of this in the form of a Palestinian friend of one of my sons (grandfather kidnapped by Hamas) and a Lebanese friend of my other son (best schoolfriend's father killed in a car bomb). Negation and destruction of the Israeli state is surely their desired aim and to this end the Church of England is proving a handy tool. As for the Palestinian cause, if Dr Dinnen genuinely cared about their plight he could instead have proposed a motion that called upon the vast and hugely wealthy Arab states to pool resources to aid materially and rehouse the section of Palestinians still living in squalid camps. That these states do not do this suggests that leaving the status quo is in fact more of a cynical tactic to use against Israel. The more recent scenario in N. Cyprus, illegally occupied by Turkey since 1974, is an interesting and enlightening comparison. A large number of Greek Cypriots, who fled when a Turkish invasion force took over and occupied 40% of the island taking several thousand men prisoner (missing even today and not accounted for), found themselves homeless and became refugees. Here is the major difference and the evidence of a country's true morality and values: The Greek Cypriot refugees were quickly helped by their government and charities. They were rehoused and built up businesses again while using every legitimate international means to pursue their cause against the Turkish government. Dr. Dinnen and the Synod should have the courage to ask the surrounding Arab countries to accept responsibility for the fact that they largely created the Palestinian problem by failing to accept the UN Partition Plan in 1948. Instead they attacked Israel by way of six armies, at the same time instructing the Palestinians to leave their homes on what they thought would be a temporary basis while they wipe out the newly formed Jewish state. The intervening decades have been a convenient aid to those who wish to revise history, so that today there are many uninformed people or those who believe much misinformation and that Israel was simply 'stolen' from the Palestinians. Indeed this state rose from the ashes of the Holocaust in which the role of many Christians and the Christian Churches was, to put it mildly, lamentable and for which we should be paying penance to Israel instead of undermining it . Dr Dinnen should have been seeking a motion condemning the Arab states for using the Palestinian issue for the past 60 years as a smokescreen for their deep racism and a diversion from their own sectarian and tribal battles and slaughter. They allow Palestinians to continue living in squalid conditions at the same time as indulging themselves in spending tens of billions of pounds in buying, in Europe and the USA, landmark buildings, football clubs, banks, hotels and even the Olympic stadium for the personal benefit of a few feudal families. He should weigh up the evidence from both sides and while doing so consider how frequently in the deeply racist Muslim world no opportunity is lost, no matter how perverse or even ridiculous, to blame Israel and the Jews.
